Yamaha 671/871 Review

Editor Review - Unbeatable build-quality for a factory horn - Less complex sound vs. handmade alternatives The 671 and 871 (custom version) are Yamaha's newest models geared toward intermediate to pro players. Based on years of research, these new variations more closely replicate the traditional Geyer design favored by many professionals. While they don't play quite like an original Geyer, they're well-made horns that project and center nicely. One long standing criticism of Yamaha's prior 667 model was its lack of projection. The new models aim to solve this with a slightly heavier bell and thicker wire. Some players may feel the horn lacks some nuance, while others may appreciate how it anchors the tone and cuts through the orchestra with greater power than the older 667 model. Like its predecessors, the new models are in tune and have a focused sound. Check out this YouTube video featuring the 671 version. The 871 is Yamaha's custom version of the 671. This means greater attention to the manufacturing process by a top-tier technician, but also some changes in the construction. Most notably, the inner tubes are made of gold brass, giving the horn a richer tonal quality. Additionally, the 4th rotor is hollow, which is purported by Yamaha to offer some tonal benefits across the full range. Overview
Pros
- Lightening fast, quiet values
- Consistency from horn to hornCons
- Cut bell case options more limitedSummary
One key benefit of any Yamaha horn are its valves. Lightening fast and quiet, players switching from other brands will be pleasantly surprised how much easier it is to play fast passages. If you get the cut bell version (671D or 871D), note that the horn may not fit in all case types. Yamaha cuts its bells taller than most.

Horn is exquisite, like a fine wine
The horn is like the woods. Deep, dark, mysterious but tender like grandma's egg rolls. A loving embrace, the voice of the horn. THE soul of the symphonic orchestra. Thank you Yamaha for the horn, design and lovingly attention to details.

YHR 671
I've had this horn for 3-4 months (today is 12/18/23) I got it from Pope horns in Boston... Ken de-laquered and cut the bell to a Alex/lawson ring.... this horn just gets better every day as I get used to it and matched a new mouthpiece... it is a solid horn, I played an 867 for over 25 years then a Patterson Knopf and had a Schmidt 1936... both of which I regrettably had to sell... but this 671 is comparable to both and I am loving it! I played a friends 871 and found not much difference between. the two .... the 671 gets a 5 out of 5 from me!!

I am a homeless man
I bought this horn by selling explicit pictures of myself and now I am able to play this on the street for money. One day I woke up and it was gone. I think Yamaha took it back because they saw me as a threat. I have heard of stories when women get assaulted and thought it was just them. No, men too. Yamaha touched me and took my horn away. #nolongeravirgin
